Botox Injections for Migraine Relief

Muscle relaxing injections such as Botox are an effective migraine treatment, helping to reduce the impact that migraines have on your quality of life. This treatment is an FDA approved, medically regulated, safe treatment and is used in the treatment of a number of medical conditions.

Migraines affect around 15% of the UK population and are most common in adults aged between 20 and 50. Migraines are possibly hereditary. In fact, as many as 90 percent of people with migraines report having family members who also suffer from them. Symptoms of migraines are intense throbbing pains, usually towards the front or side of the head, nausea, vomiting, seeing spots, extreme fatigue, sensitivity to light and sound and more. Migraine symptoms can last from anywhere between 4 hours to 3 days. Here at The Lynton Clinic, with muscle-relaxing injections Mandie Dransfield can help treat Migraines.

FAQs

What are the side effects of Botox for migraines?

Side effects are generally mild and will typically go away within a day or two. They may include:

  • Headaches or sore neck
  • Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site
  • Drooping eyelids or eyebrows
  • Temporarily blurred vision
  • Dry eyes or excessive tearing

Mandie Dransfield will discuss these side effects with you during your appointment, including what over-the-counter medications you can take to ease the discomfort.

What’s the difference between a headache and a migraine?

Botox is an approved treatment for those who struggle with headaches for more than 15 days per month and experience migraines for at least 8 of those days.

But what’s the difference between a headache and a migraine?

Headaches can cause pain in different parts of the head according to their cause.

  • Some headaches may be caused by physical or psychological stress (tension headaches)
  • Others are caused by sinus pressure (sinus headaches)
  • Cluster headaches refer to particularly intense headaches that tend to happen around the same time each day

On the other hand, migraines often involve other symptoms aside from head pain. They may include dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, as well as severe fatigue (tiredness). Migraines may occur in different phases, which may involve symptoms and signs like blurred vision, mood disturbances, and trouble with speech.

What is Botox? Is it safe?

Botox is created from botulinum toxin. While the idea of being injected with a toxin may sound scary, Botox actually contains such a miniscule amount of toxin that there is little chance of dangerous side effects. Since 2010, the FDA has recognized Botox as a safe treatment for migraines when administered by a licensed medical professional.

How does Botox work for migraines?

Botox works by reducing muscle contractions and stopping  neurotransmitters from sending pain signals to your brain. This can help reduce the pain caused by migraines and lets many patients enjoy daily life without interruption.

The effect is only temporary, so patients will need to receive ongoing treatment. The most common treatment timeline involves an injection every 12 weeks, or four times per year. It may take several weeks to experience migraine relief after an injection. Mandie Dransfield will adjust this timeline according to your individual needs.

How effective is Botox for migraines?

Botox helps improve quality of life for migraine sufferers and can help to convert a migraine from chronic to episodic. Studies show that 47% of patients had a 50% or greater reduction in the number of days with headache.
Response is usually seen after the first or second set of injections. One in four people respond well to the first or second set of injections, and half need more than two sets of injections to get a good response.
The biological effect of Botox on nerves takes several days or a few weeks to work. You should not expect chronic migraine to improve properly in less than 4 weeks. Some patients do not start to improve until after their second set of injections which is given 12 weeks after the first set of injections.
Around 1 in 4 patients do not respond to the injections at all and only 1 in 10 people respond to a third set of injections if the first two sets of injections fail.

Always made to feel very welcome at the establishment from 1st arrival to leaving.  Both Kirsty and the receptionist (unfortunately didnt catch her name) are very friendly and always professional. Good advice offered as always and looking forward to further visits

We would like to thank the girls at The Lynton Clinic for their support with my daughter Shannon – you have given her confidence back – The treatment has made a massive improvement (to the marks) and the staff are totally genuine and are lovely and friendly. Thank you again. We can’t put into words how grateful we are.

I have had a course of laser hair removal on my back at The Lynton Clinic, having suffered with in-growing hairs now for years I wish I had found this treatment earlier. I no longer have to suffer with this problem and I also have hardly any hair left that I have to deal with. I found them to be very professional and would highly recommend this clinic and treatment to anyone

Andrew Godwin

Barbara, Macclesfield

I've been a client of Kirsty's for some time and cannot rate her or the clinic highly enough, Kirsty and the team are professional, knowledgeable, and hugely experienced in laser and skin care, they offer a plethora of solutions to skin and body concerns and generally a lot more than perhaps you initially realise therefore it's worth looking on the website where you'll find an extensive list of treatments, I would not go anywhere else for laser or skincare, I understand they are introducing new treatments in the new year so look forward to trying them!!

Sharon Parkes

Visited the clinic a while back for some advice and treatment on some pigmentation I was suffering from. They were informative and helpful at all times and helped me towards correcting my problem. The clinic was always immaculate and the staff were friendly and really know what they are doing, would definitely recommend.

My skin looks so much clearer, I even cried the other morning when I saw it and it looked so much better! I am so happy with my results

Jenny M, Lynton Clinic Customer, 2019

I am currently undergoing IPL (half face) treatment with Stacey to combat Rosacea. This follows targeted laser treatment on deeper thread veins on my face. Stacey is very professional, knowledgeable and kind. She makes you feel at ease. So far so good - I can't wait for the final result.
