Microneedling for Scars

Microneedling for Scars

Microneedling treament has long been used to reduce scars making it possible to improve the look and feel of scarred skin.

Scars can be a source of self-consciousness and discomfort for many individuals. Whether caused by acne, surgery, injury, or stretch marks, scars can leave a lasting impact on the skin’s appearance and texture.

One of the most effective methods available today is Radio Frequency (RF) Microneedling—a revolutionary combination of microneedling and radio frequency technology designed to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process and promote collagen production. In this blog, we will explore how RF Microneedling works, the types of scars it can treat, what to expect during and after treatment, and why this cutting-edge procedure is becoming the go-to solution for scar reduction.

Microneedling Treatement For Scars: How Does It Work With RF?

Radio Frequency (RF) Microneedling combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with the added power of radio frequency energy, offering a highly effective treatment for scars and overall skin rejuvenation. Microneedling itself has been used for years to improve the appearance of scars by creating micro-punctures in the skin, which help break down old scar tissue and trigger the production of fresh collagen and elastin. Additionally, microneedling promotes melanin production, which plays a crucial role in maintaining your natural skin tone.

Introducing RF technology into microneedling enhances the skin’s ability to heal and regenerate. The Focus Dual device, with its ultra-fine 0.16mm needles and advanced vacuum technology, delivers radio frequency energy deep into the skin’s layers, ensuring precise and effective treatment. This added heat further stimulates collagen and elastin production, leading to smoother, firmer, and more even-toned skin.

Why Do We Have Scars?

Scars form as a natural part of the body’s healing process when the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis) are damaged. During wound healing, the body produces new collagen fibres, but these fibres are structurally different from the collagen found in healthy skin. As a result, scars have a different texture and appearance than the surrounding skin. Once healing is complete, the scar remains as a visible mark of past injury or trauma.

What Types Of Scars Can RF Microneedling Help With?

Radio Frequency Microneedling is quickly becoming the ‘go-to’ treatment. It can treat most scars on the face and body, including:

  • Surgery scars
  • Injury scars
  • Self-harm scars
  • Acne scars
  • Hypertrophic scars (raised white scars)
  • Sunken scars
  • Stretch marks

However, keloid scars cannot be treated with RF Microneedling. Keloid scarring occurs when excess scar tissue grows beyond the original wound site, often appearing as raised, red, or purple scars. This type of scarring is different from hypertrophic scars, which are also raised but remain within the wound boundary and appear white.

It is important that scars are fully healed before undergoing RF Microneedling. Scars that are still actively healing are not suitable for treatment.

What Will RF Microneedling Feel Like?

RF Microneedling treatments are virtually pain-free, although some clients describe minimal discomfort. Before the treatment, the skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepped. The Focus Dual handpiece is then passed over the skin, creating micro-channels that trigger new collagen production. As the ultra-fine needles penetrate the skin, radio frequency energy is delivered into the deeper layers, generating a warming sensation. Some patients report feeling slight pressure or warmth during the procedure, but overall, the treatment is well-tolerated.

What Can I Expect After My RF Microneedling Scar Treatment?

Following your RF Microneedling treatment, you may experience:

  • Redness and warmth, similar to mild sunburn, which subsides within a few days.

  • Slight swelling in the treated area.

  • Gradual improvement in skin texture and tone as the skin heals and new collagen forms.

The healing process varies for each individual. While some patients notice visible improvements after just one session, most require a course of 3-5 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart for optimal results.

When Will I See Results?

Results from RF Microneedling are not immediate, as the skin requires time to remodel and generate new collagen, elastin, and melanin. Most patients see noticeable improvements within 3-6 months after their final treatment session.

Virtually No Downtime

Unlike invasive procedures, Focus Dual RF Microneedling scar treatments involve virtually no downtime. After treatment you might experience redness and swelling at the treatment site but this is usually minor and tends to disappear after a few days.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

As your skin is your body’s largest organ and entirely unique to you, it is not possible to be exact on the number of treatments that you will require. A ‘normal’ course of treatment would be 3-5 treatments that take place 3-4 weeks apart.  You can, however, continue to have treatment until you are happy with the results, or until your skin stops responding to our RF Microneedling scar treatments.

How Much Do Treatments Cost?

At your initial consultation your scars will be assessed and your practitioner will advise you on the exact cost of treatment. Treatment times and cost are dependent on the type of scarring that you have and the number of sessions that are required to achieve results.

How Long Will The Results Last?

Results from RF Microneedling are long-lasting because the treatment stimulates the production of new, strong collagen, elastin, and melanin. Once a full course of treatment is completed, most scars do not require further intervention unless new skin damage occurs. For conditions such as stretch marks, occasional maintenance treatments may be needed.
